TACLOBAN CITY – A day after the ambush-killing of his lawyer Rogelio Bato Jr and his teenage companion, Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa Jr voluntarily went to the Leyte Provincial Prosecutor’s office to execute an affidavit naming his son Kerwin’s connections and protector.
The list, according to PNP Regional Director PSSUPT Elmer Beltejar, would stregthen the filing of cases against those who are involved, and will launch more police operations against Kerwin’s connection.
Without naming names, Beltejar said the list includes high-ranking police officers (Generals), LGU members and other protectors from various sectors.
Aside from the list given to the President by Mayor Espinosa, Beltejar claimed that there are new names included in the sworn statement of the former, which was subscribed by the provincial prosecutors office.
“It should not be self-incriminating against him. Mag substantiate lang ito ng mga link sa diagram sa mga drug syndicates sa region 8 at sa region 7,” said Beltejar.
“The affidavit is substantial because we discovered new names that we didn’t see before,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mayor Espinosa sought protective security from Albuera Chief of Police Police Chief Inspector Juvie Espinido.
“He felt more secure inside the police station,” Espinido said.
The mayor applied for protective protection, but this will only be approved on two conditions: the Mayor should stay inside the Police Station; and second the police cannot provide him security when he intends to go out.
The mayor admitted getting a lot of death threats.
On the other hand, the police official revealed that Atty. Rogelio Bato is on the drug watch list of authorities. He is considered as a High Valued Target (level 2) as he is a member of the Espinosa drug group.
Reviewing their records, police found that Atty. Bato handled all the drug-related cases of the Espinosas in the past and allegedly got protection from the drug syndicate.
“His name appears on all custodisal briefing reports.”
According to Beltejar, Mayor Espinosa told him that the lawyer was using illegal drugs whenever he visited their hotel in Albuera. And the pick-up truck used by the lawyer was given by the Espinosas for his legal services.
Meanwhile, Beltejar felt sad about the involvement of Angelika Bonita in the crime.
“Naaawa tayo kasi nadamay ang bata kasi hindi naman siya kasama sa watch list. We do not tolerate extra-judicial killings. We will exert efforts para maimbestigahan ang nangyaring krimen,” the official said.
