Guess who’s coming to town: US Secretary of State John Kerry to meet with Duterte in PH visit – Politiko
High-level officials from Washington just keep on coming to Manila. United States Secretary of State John Kerry will fly to the Philippines from July 26 to 27 to meet with President Rodrigo Duterte. Mark Toner, the deputy spokesperson of the US State Department, said Kerry will also meet with Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay during his visit. During the meetings, Kerry will discuss with Duterte and Yasay “the full range” of US’ “cooperation with the new administration,” Toner said in a statement issued Tuesday in Washington (Wednesday in Manila, July 20). The American politiko’s visit comes at the heels of the Philippines’ victory in its arbitration case against China concerning the West Philippine Sea. Earlier this month, former US ambassador to the Philippines and now State Department counselor Kristie Kenney returned to Manila to meet with key officials of the Duterte administration. She said she made the trip on Kerry’s request. On Tuesday (July 19), Duterte met with US Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg and a delegation from the US Congress in Malacañang.
