Will President Rodrigo Duterte be allowed to judge Miss Universe 2017 here in the Philippines?

This scenario was teased by Department of Tourism (DOT) Undersecretary Katherine Chloe de Castro on Friday (December 9), saying it’s possible that the organizers of the biggest beauty pageant in the world could “make an exception” for Duterte.

“I think Miss Universe Organization is very much welcome to have him in the show. Apparently, it’s a rule for Miss Universe Organization not to have a judge from the host country but I think if it’s the President, that’s gonna be another, you know, I think they will make an exception to the rule,” De Castro said in a press conference in Malacañang.

The coronation night with be held on January 30, 2017 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

A week before that, Duterte will host all the candidates–almost 100 of them–at the Palace for their courtesy call.

As for the judging gig, De Castro said it’s been broached to Duterte but “he has not yet given us a concrete answer”.

“But we have reserved, you know, a VIP section just for the President and to everybody else in Malacañang. So abangan na lang po natin.

“Hopefully, by the first week of January [DOT] Asec. [Ricky] Alegre and I will have an answer from the President himself,” De Castro said.
